Jodo Shinshu Teachings:

Amida Buddha, the Buddha of Infinite Light (Wisdom) and Immeasurable Life (Compassion) is the Buddha in Jodo Shinshu.

A. One who is aspired for reaching the bliss of Nirvana does not enter Nirvana until or unless all beings in suffering also reach Nirvana. This innermost aspirations to liberate all beings from suffering is the heart of Amida Buddha.

B. The Wisdom and Compassion of Amida Buddha are manifested and  endowed to all beings through the following features of the power of the Primal Vow:

  1. Primal Vow - The Compassionate heart of Amida Buddha to lead all beings from the suffering of human existence to Buddha's land of peace.
  2. Name - Name of Amida Buddha (Namo Amida Butsu) is enlightenment, wisdom and compassion to all beings. Amida Buddha vowed that this Name is to be heard and acknowledged by all beings.
  3. True entrusting - The true and real mind of Amida Buddha which is conveyed in the  Name, when heard by all beings, becomes true entrusting in hearts and minds. This True entrusting is faith (Shinjin) in Shin Buddhism.
  4. The Name that calls.
